This makes me wish I spoke German. What the people should have done is pick up the little mirror that was on the wall and hold it behind the woman who did have a reflection. If there were truly two mirrors there you'd see an infinite series of reflections, but because it was just an identical twin behind glass, the deception would have been revealed.
