What is the "A-Hole Patrol"?

The A-Hole Patrol is JibJab's volunteer community police force that is entrusted with helping keep the JibJab community safe from pornographers, hate mongers and extremists. The A-Hole Patrol (1) reviews new submissions to JibJab (2) investigates reports of abuse in the community and (3) re-reviews jokes that have been reported as offensive by JibJabbers.

If the A-Hole Patrol determines that the joke meets any of the following criteria, it will be pulled from the site:

* Is not a Joke
  - Car chases
  - Sentimental or patriotic material
  - Sports highlights (non-blooper)
  - Interesting (but not funny) news

* Contains Explicit Pornography
  - Nudity can be funny and is allowed
  - Rated NC-17 is acceptable... just rate it appropriately!
  - Rated X is NOT acceptable

* Contains Graphic Violence
  - Getting hit in the groin can be funny
  - Getting hit by a train or shot isn't
  - If it appears there is severe body injury, it is not allowed

* Contains Hateful Material
  - Attacks on race, religion, sex, age or disability are not allowed

* Joke is not visible or appears to be broken Back to Top

How can I join the A-Hole Patrol?

The A-Hole Patrol is an invitation-only subset of the JibJab community. Invitations are extended on an as-needed basis to active, trusted members.

While you can't volunteer for the A-Hole Patrol, uploading lots of good jokes and rating tons of other people's jokes will increase your chances of being invited. Back to Top

How can I avoid seeing offensive jokes?

We are working hard to build technologies that will enable us to understand your individual joke preferences so that you will never see a joke you'd find offensive on JibJab. In the meantime, the surest way to avoid offensive material is to select the rating categories you don't want to see (e.g., "Red") in your "Account Settings".

To select the ratings you don't want to see, go to "My JibJab" and then click the "Edit" link under “About Me”. You will find a section titled "Alerts Preferences". Click the content ratings that you do not want to see. When you are done, click "Save".

Once you do this, we will never show you a joke in the rating category you selected without first showing you a warning label before you view the joke. Back to Top

Why do some jokes have a warning label in front of them?

You will see a warning label in front of all jokes that have a rating that matches those selected in your "Alerts Preferences" (e.g. Red). However, you can still see the current joke simply by clicking the green "Click Here to View this Joke" button. Back to Top

What's the deal with the Naughtiness ratings?

We recently changed the naughtiness rating to be easier to understand with less discrepancies. This makes it simpler to both decide what rating a joke deserves and which jokes a user might wish to view, as opposed to the complex nature of the MPAA ratings. Back to Top

How do the Naughtiness ratings get assigned?

When a joke is first uploaded to JokeBox, it is given an initial rating by the submitter. After that, A-Hole Patrol assigns their ratings during the joke review process. Once it gets posted to the website, each and every member of the community gets to chime in by clicking the rating above the joke that they think best reflects how risque it is. Each night we take the average of all the users' ratings and the joke is then given this average rating. Back to Top

How can I report inappropriate content?

Below every joke is a link that says ‘Flag/Report’. If you click this link, you will be asked why you think the joke is inappropriate and the joke will then be placed into the A-Hole Patrol review queue.

However, when viewing jokes, we ask that you please keep an open mind; people have widely varying senses of humor and some may find things funny that you don't. Please don't report a joke as offensive just because you don't think it is funny.

In addition, remember that each joke is given a Naughtiness rating. If a joke contains material that you are not comfortable with (Ex: nudity), make sure it is rated appropriately and, if it isn't, give it your own rating by clicking the appropriate Naughty rating to the right of the joke. See the FAQ below to find out how to block material you might find offensive.

Please only report jokes as offensive that meet the following criteria:

* Is not a Joke
  - Car chases
  - Sentimental or patriotic material
  - Sports highlights (non-blooper)
  - Interesting (but not funny) news

* Contains Explicit Pornography
  - Nudity can be funny and is allowed
  - Rated NC-17 is acceptable... just rate it appropriately!
  - Rated X is NOT acceptable

* Contains Graphic Violence
  - Getting hit in the groin can be funny
  - Getting hit by a train or shot isn't
  - If it appears there is severe body injury, it is not allowed

* Contains Hateful Material
  - Attacks on race, religion, sex, age or disability are not allowed
